Drivers Licenses in NJ Scheme

An owner of a driving school in Plainfield, New Jersey pleaded guilty today to conspiring for a decade with employees of the Division of Motor Vehicle Services to produce drivers' licenses in exchange for illicit cash payments, according to US Attorney Christopher J. Christie. This included providing drivers' licenses to illegal aliens.

Jose L. Flores, a/k/a "Mr. Pepe," 45, of Watchung, admitted before US District Judge William H. Walls to participating in a statewide scheme with multiple DMV employees to unlawfully generate drivers' licenses. Flores, who was an owner of a driving school he identified during the plea as Mr. Pepe's Driving School, in Plainfield, NJ, admitted making cash payments ranging from $20 to $100 to each DMV employee who assisted in generating a particular driver's license.

In exchange for illicit cash payments from him, Flores confessed that DMV employees did any of the following:

* produced drivers' licenses for students of his, who were illegal aliens not entitled to such identification documents;

* completed written drivers tests for his students;

* scheduled his students early for commercial driver's license (CDL) road test appointments;

* tested his students for CDLs without a road test appointment; and

* exercised leniency in grading the performance of his students.

Flores admitted that his involvement in this scheme lasted for a decade, from 1993 to 2003 and that he paid DMV employees on a weekly basis during that time. Flores said that the fraud involved DMV employees working at offices throughout the New Jersey, including facilities in Springfield, Trenton, South Plainfield, Randolph, Edison, and Cherry Hill.

When he is sentenced by Judge Walls, Flores faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to Assistant US Attorney Brian R. Howe. Judge Walls scheduled sentencing for March 28, 2006.

Flores is now the 15th individual to plead guilty in connection with the driver's license fraud scheme, in which employees of the state agency and non-employees received hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce and procure licenses in an unlawful manner. Flores is cooperating with the authorities in the investigation of others.

Here are some winter driving tips from AAA to keep you safe on the road this season:

Charge! - Cold weather is tough on batteries. At zero degrees Fahrenheit, a car's battery loses about 60 percent of its strength. At a mild 32 degrees Fahrenheit, a battery is 35 percent weaker. Keeping battery terminals clean helps, but a load test performed by a qualified automotive technician will help determine whether a car's battery is strong enough for winter starts.

Get a Grip - Make sure your car is equipped with tires that are able to handle your region's winter weather. Check the tire tread. Good tread allows water to escape from under the tires and increases traction. Keep tires at proper pressure. A chart with the manufacturer's recommended inflation pressure can be found on the driver side door jamb, inside the glove box, or on the fuel filler flap. For most motorists, all-season tires are adequate. In northern or mountainous regions, switching to snow tires may be needed. Motorists also should observe storm watch advisories that urge the use of snow chains or they may risk being turned around by law enforcement, getting stuck in the snow, or even in a major crash.

See and Be Seen - Danger must be visible to be avoided. Driving with a snow-covered windshield, windows, side-view mirrors or lights invites a crash. Steer Clear - Steering is preferred to braking at speeds above 25 mph because less distance is required to steer around an object than to brake to a stop. Sudden braking often leads to skids. Increase following distance. The extra distance provides a buffer in case of skids.

Air it Out - Don't let frigid temperatures tempt you into starting your car in a closed garage or idling your engine for long periods with the windows closed. Carbon monoxide, present in exhaust fumes, is almost impossible to detect and can be fatal when breathed in a confined area. Make sure those exhaust parts are in good shape too.

Finish Up - Road salt, slush and grime are especially hard on a car's finish. To help prevent rust and paint damage, keep cars washed and waxed. A full or self-service car wash makes the job easier when temperatures are low.

First you come to an almost complete stop slowing down and as the water starts to move forward you slightly let of the brake and thus it rocks the truck back a little slowing the vehicle and then you abruptly stop at the last second. What does this do you ask?

Well, as it starts to rock backwards you tap the brake. This halves the travel of the water backwards and then the two waves in the tank hit each other on the next cycle. Rogue wave inside of the tank going up and down and cancels it out, the shocks on the trailer take it from there and not the transmission. I always use to do this and those who do not will buy new transmissions in their vehicle every couple of years.

You Just Got Your CDL License – Now What?

You are going to spend a few months, my case three, to obtain a French driver's license. Then you will see on a daily basis drivers running red lights, driving way over the speed limit and other infractions.

Congratulations! You just completed and passed the instructional driving courses and earned your Commercial Driver's License (CDL). So now that you are licensed to drive a truck, what is your next step?

Unless you have a thing about big trucks and just wanted the license to say you have it, chances are you went to school and got your CDL because you want to be a truck driver. Luckily for you, there are a number of opportunities just waiting to be found. It is up to you to find the trucking jobs that best fit your needs.

Think about why you wanted to be a trucker in the first place. Was it to see the country? The salary? Do you enjoy the driving? What kind of truck or payload do you want to haul? Writing down everything you are looking for in trucking jobs will solidify things in your mind when you start your job hunt.
Find a driving school - Not an easy course in and of itself, because so many go out of business. I went with L'Ecole de Conduite Francaise(ECF)a chain, to obtain my license.

There are many avenues in which to pursue trucking jobs. First of all, check your local papers - both the dailies as well as the Sunday issues which usually have an extra classified section just for employment. Often times, trucking companies in your area that are seeking qualified licensed truck drivers will advertise available positions. Keep your eyes and ears open too. Billboards are becoming more popular, with trucking companies sometimes purchasing billboard space if they are in a big hiring push. Television ads and even posters displayed at libraries and other public places are other areas to keep an eye on.

The truck driving school where you trained and earned your CDL is another avenue to pursue in your quest for trucking jobs. Often times, a trucking company will post available positions in their company through the school's connections. So you have to remember to ask because these are not always advertised!
Once you receive a valid learners permit, you will then need to pass a road skills test in addition to vision and hearing tests to receive a FL drivers license.

The internet is also a major source for trucking jobs. There are tons of employment websites that cater to helping you find a job. Most of them do not specialize in truck driving. However, with a few web searches, you can come up with some sites that do. Another internet option is researching the trucking companies themselves. Perhaps you know of a few trucking companies in your area. Look them up and see if they have trucking jobs on their website.
Under Florida DMV guidelines, anyone who drives a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit.

Searching for trucking jobs is the easy part. The hard part is determining which trucking company is the right one for you. You might have to move to a different area or travel to places that you prefer not to go. Think about those issues as well as the reputation of the trucking company and the benefits and salary. Your decision will mark the start of a new life and career for you.

Getting Your Drivers License

Can you remember when you turned 16? It was a huge day in my life as I'm sure is in millions of other American youth for this was the day that we got our drivers license. Don't even try to deny it. We all wanted that little card so badly we could hardly stand it. It was going to change our lives. If you are a male, I know you were dying to acquire that legal piece of plastic that said you could finally drive on your own. It meant cruising around with your buddies and taking your best girl out on a date.

Indeed, the very definition of a drivers license is freedom. So many of us actually believe that we can venture out to any place, near or far, once we've earned the almighty drivers license. I guess that was little overly optimistic. Not to sell the access card short, but like many other things, the reality never quite lived up to the expectation. Nevertheless, it's great to finally get your drivers license and enjoy the sweet freedom that it brings. When did you get your drivers license? I remember that I got mine the very day I turned 16. Where I came from, we could get our learners permits when we turned 15, so I already logged some pretty good miles. Finally the license was attainable. What I find funny now days is the change in mentality. I see our 17 son and scratch my head.

Driving Distractions Do You Need Cream and Sugar

Early one morning last week while sitting at a traffic light, I watched a man eating a bowl of cereal. He carefully lifted each spoonful to his mouth and then drove off when the light changed.

I've been known to eat while driving - wadded up hamburger wrappers under the front seats give ample testimony. The large brown coffee stain on the carpet tells the tale of a sharp turn and a drink carrier stability problem. Occasionally, I clean out the neat little take-out boxes that once held prime rib sandwiches. I know about eating and driving but even I have never eaten cereal while driving, although I was once tempted to sample some doggie-bag spaghetti while driving home from a restuarant.

In our rapid-paced auto-erratic world many people save time by eating on the run. We don't want to eat right . . . we want to eat right now!

Like cell phone use, eating is a distraction and is the cause of many auto accidents, especially in the morning. Food is not so much the culprit, but rather the vehicle. Drivers on their way to work don't want to arrive at the office with a chest full of dribbles. So, they watch for globs, gobs, and drips - taking their eyes off the road.

Taco Bell has taken the need for fast-food driving to heart. Many of their new products are designed to be more drip-dry with thicker shredded cheese and crunchier taco shells that hold together better.

To me, chocolate is the shocker on the list. It's so easy to nibble on a chocolate bar or bon bon while driving. It seems so innocuous, but stop and think how chocolate can stain, specially on a hot day. A piece of Brown & Haley Bavarian Cr me smeared on your shirt front and you're marked as a sloppy person. Dressing for success does not include food stains.

What can you do to protect yourself . . . if you want to continue to eat and drive?

Here are six things that will allow you to continue driving in the fast-food lane:

Keep a big linen napkin in your automobile - Use the large napkin to tuck into your collar so any drips fall onto the napkin -- like a baby's bib it will help protect your clothes.

Keep a roll of paper towels in your car - Paper towels can not only give you something to wipe your hands on, but they're also great for soaking up spills.

Use a hardside drink container with a lid - While you can get a paper cup with a plastic lid and drink from that, what sometimes causes a spill is the weak sides of the container colapsing. A hardside container is easier to control . . . and safer.

Find a cup holder to accomodate your favorite beverage - In most auto parts stores you can find cup holders for almost any size drinking container. By purchasing one that fits your container you will feel extra safe knowing that your cup holder will keep your container from falling, under normal conditions.

Keep a bottle of club soda in your car - If you do spill something on your clothes, knowing that you can possibly clean it up will help alleviate some of your fears about making a mess.

Keep a clean shirt or blouse in the auto - It's always smart to have a second set of clothes, just in case . . .

By eleminating potential problems and preparing for food accidents you can hopefully reduce distractions and worry. If you do have a massive spill, you'll feel much better knowing that you can still make that morning meeting looking nice, neat and professional . . . if you started out looking that way.
